Absolut Vodka

Absolut Vodka

By Robert Plotkin

Lars Olsen Smith secured his preeminent position in the Swedish spirits industry when he opened a state-of-the-art facility in 1897 equipped with a revolutionary new column still and began bottling Absolut Renat Brannvin ("absolutely pure vodka"). The brand became an immediate hit due largely to its unprecedented quality and enhanced taste. It is this spirit that inspired the creation of Absolut® Vodka.

The world-renowned brand is distilled in Åhus, a picturesque town on the southern coast of Sweden. Absolut Vodka is made entirely from a mash of locally grown wheat and purified well water. It is quadruple-distilled in a continuous still and emerges at extremely high proof. The vodka is not subjected to filtration before being reduced with water to 80-proof.

Introduced in the United States in 1979, Absolut is now the bestselling imported vodka in the United States and with good reason. It has pristine clarity and a lightweight body with the lush texture of velvet. The vodka has a subtle bouquet of citrus, pine and clover and a clean, marvelously neutral palate. The finish is crisp and refreshing.

Those looking for more of the Absolut experience may want to sample Absolut® 100, an ultra-sleek spirit with an ethereal character and a touch of heat on the finish attributable to its elevated alcohol content.

The famed line of 80-proof flavored vodkas includes Absolut Vanilia (vanilla), Citron (citrus), Peppar (pepper), Kurant (currant), Raspberri (raspberry), Ruby Red (grapefruit), Pears (pear), Apeach (peach), Mandrin (mandarin orange) and Mango Vodka.
