Carmessi Reposado 100% Agave Tequila

Carmessí Reposado
100% Agave Tequila

By Robert Plotkin

Reposado is the bestselling expression of tequila in its native land. It sells the best here in the States as well. The likely explanation behind its universal popularity is that collectively reposados inherit the best qualities of the other expressions. They possess some of the youthful vitality and exuberance of blanco tequila along with a dose of the barrel-aged sophistication of añejo. One could call reposados the best of both worlds. A memorable way to put the theory to the test is sipping Carmessí Reposado 100% Agave Tequila.

This Highland gem is handcrafted at Casa San Matías (NOM 1103), an estate distillery located above 6,000 feet in the Los Altos Mountains of Tepatitlán. Its microclimate and red volcanic soil are ideal for the cultivation of agaves. After harvesting, the estate's agaves are baked in traditional clay ovens for 48 hours before being shredded and transferred to stainless steel fermentation vats. There the juice is allowed to slowly ferment before being double-distilled in stainless steel stills. Casa San Matías uses only pure mineral water sourced from nearby springs in producing its tequilas.

Carmessí is a sublime reposado matured for 11 month in charred American white oak barrels. The straw-colored tequila has a satiny textured body and a brilliant nose of dried herbs, fresh-cut flowers and toasted oak. Its soft, entry reveals the flavors of citrus, vanilla, toffee, flora and herbaceous agave. The dry, lingering finish serves to seal the deal.

As good as this 80-proof marvel is to sip neat, it's equally delightful featured in an artisanal cocktail. The Carmessí Reposado is classically structured and well balanced, two attributes highly prized by today's celebrity mixologists. Add in that's delicious and you've hit the trifecta.
