Cruzan Single Barrel Rum

Cruzan Single
Barrel Estate Rum

By Robert Plotkin

The new standard bearer in this age of small indulgences is the unfettered pleasure of sipping añejo rums. Search as hard as you might, you won't find a more luxurious spirit to sip than that of Cruzan Single Barrel Estate Rum. As a single barrel rum, enjoying this lovely spirit is a once in a lifetime occurrence that simply must be seized when the opportunity arises.

Crafted in St. Croix, this limited production, handcrafted rum is made from a blend of triple-distilled rums aged between 5- and 12-years in American oak bourbon barrels. After blending, the rum is placed in new American white oak casks that are heavily charred inside for secondary aging. This extended aging allows the elements of the blend to "marry" and fully integrate. No batch is bottled until a panel of tasters deems the rum ready for release.

The result of the "double casking" can be perceived in every aspect of the rum's character. It has a lustrous, tawny red color and a medium to full body. The sumptuous bouquet is loaded with the aromas of butterscotch, spice, vanilla and a hint of smoke. The palate is brimming with flavor and tannin from the oak, all of which taper off to a long satiny finish.

This is an ultra-sophisticated spirit that should be doted over, sipped straight up or on the rocks. If, however, you're in the mood for a cocktail, Cruzan Single Barrel Estate Rum is more than ready to play.
