Dos Armadillos
Reposado 100% Agave

By Robert Plotkin

Most consumers know all too well that there is often a disconnect between enhanced packaging and the quality of the product inside. Frankly, it gets disheartening when you buy a tequila, for example, only to learn that the bottle is far more appealing than the spirit it contains. That's fortunately not the case with super-premium Dos Armadillos 100% Agave Tequila. The bottles and tequila inside are fetching works of art.

Dos Armadillos Tequila is made at Premium de Jalisco [NOM 1558] in the village of Mazamitla from mature agaves grown in the rich soil of Amatitán. The agaves are brought to the distillery where they are cooked with steam in stainless steel autoclaves. Afterwards, they are crushed, transferred to fermentation tanks and allowed to slowly ferment naturally over the course of seven days. The fermented wash—called mosto—is then double-distilled in small batches and rendered to 40% alcohol (80 proof) prior to bottling.

Dos Armadillos Reposado is matured a minimum of six months in medium charred, virgin oak barrels made in Missouri. During its extended stay in wood, the tequila develops a golden/amber hue, a velvety medium-weight body and a glorious bouquet of flora, fresh fruit, vanilla and toffee with a whiff of charred oak. Its aromatics are well worth the price of admission. The gentle entry quickly expands bathing the palate with the flavors of dark chocolate, caramel, vanilla, honey, roasted chiles, baking spices and toasted oak. The reposado has an agreeably long finish, which makes it an ideal candidate for sipping neat.

The altogether elegant Dos Armadillos Añejo is aged in medium charred, virgin oak barrels for 1 1/2 years, which is 6 months longer than is required by law. After several minutes aerating the glass, the dark amber tequila begins to release its aromatics that include herbs, pepper, vanilla and honey with enticing notes of toasted oak. The longer the tequila is allowed to breath, the more engaging the nose becomes. The gentle entry develops into a delightful mix of long lasting spicy and herbaceous flavors. The finish is satiny smooth and thoroughly satisfying. This is an excellent choice to serve guests after a fine dinner.

The Dos Armadillos Plata is an exuberant spirit bottled fresh from the still unadulterated by the effects of aging in wood. The crystal clear tequila has a flawless body and a generous, floral bouquet. Its palate presents an impressive array of flavors including fresh lemons, cinnamon, bananas, white pepper, anise and red plums. The finish is clean and crisp.

While all of the Dos Armadillos expressions make inspired ingredients for upscale cocktails, do yourself a favor and make sure you first taste them neat. Each has an abundance of character and a sublime personality.

So what's with the reference to armadillos in the brand name? The answer is actually the stuff of legends. In Teuchitlan folklore, the armadillo is portrayed as the protector of the ancient cultures of Mexico. Its likeness adorns clay artifacts and pottery dating back a thousand years. Dos Armadillos pays homage to its ancient origins.

Great tequilas presented in beautiful artisanal bottles is a recipe for long-term success.
