Double Cross Vodka

By Robert Plotkin

Some products affect you viscerally. Double Cross Vodka, on the other hand, directly engages your intellect. It's an ultra-sophisticated spirit with a satiny texture and a marvelously soft, clean finish. If you've ever wondered what's behind the popular fascination with vodka, a few sips of Double Cross will more than satisfy your curiosity. Even its bottle exudes style and the concept of affordable luxury.

Launched in 2008, the award-winning vodka is made in the northeastern region of Slovakia at a family-run distillery located in the Tatra Mountains. It's handcrafted in small batches from estate-grown winter wheat and pure mountain spring water drawn from aquifers located 200 feet below the ground. A complex, seven-step distillation process is employed to produce the spirit. After it exits the still, Double Cross is filtered 7-times using limestone, activated charcoal micro-filters to ensure essential purity. The vodka is then bottled at 40% alcohol by volume (80 proof).

Double Cross Vodka is world-class in every respect and is far more elegant than many vodkas marketed at twice its price. The impeccably clear spirit has a silky medium-weight body and an enticing bouquet saturated with vanilla, cocoa and citrus-like aromas. For an ostensibly neutral vodka, there certainly is a lot going on. It has a gentle, smooth entry that quickly expands revealing the subtle flavors of lemon zest, pepper, spice and semisweet grain. The well-balanced finish is crisp, dry and slightly spicy.

Suffice to say, Double Cross Vodka is too good to share with the in-laws. At no moment in the experience of drinking the spirit does it glow warm with alcohol. It's a genuine pleasure from start to sublime finish.

Double Cross is one of those rare and intriguing vodkas that is best sipped neat or served wearing nothing but a slight chill. That said, the brand is also perfectly cast as the featured performer in any vodka-based libation.

The vodka's brand name was inspired by the double cross symbol found in the Slovakian flag and coat of arms, and the rectangular bottle is silk screened with verses of 18th-century Slovakian poetry. The stylish bottle does the spirit proud and its homeland proud.

Na Zdravie!
