El Charro Anejo Tequila

El Charro 100% Puro
de Agave Añejo Tequila

By Robert Plotkin

America’s fascination with artisan tequilas borders on the phenomenal and El Charro 100% Puro de Agave Añejo Tequila provides an excellent example of why. The small batch tequila is generously aromatic and loaded with lush, oak-induced flavors, a thoroughly engaging spirit from opening curtain to closing act.

Produced by Compañia Tequilero de Arandas, El Charro 100% agave tequila begins with agaves grown in the red volcanic soil high in the surrounding mountains. After harvesting, the fully mature agaves are baked, slowly fermented and double-distilled in traditional pot stills. The tequila earmarked for the añejo is distilled a third time prior to being matured 24-months in small, French white oak barrels, which because of its wide grain pattern, allows the tequila to extract more flavorants from the wood.

The result is skillfully crafted tequila with an alluring, deep amber-hue, a curvy, medium-weight body and a brilliant bouquet of citrus, cinnamon, sliced plums and vanilla. Its flavored-saturated palate bathes the mouth with warmth and waves of caramel, butterscotch, black pepper and toasted oak. The finish is long, slightly spicy and satisfying.

El Charro Reposado spends 6-months in oak in the distillery's cellars, which is a sufficient amount of time to soften its character, while leaving the inherent quality of the agave unaffected by the tannins in the wood. Unaged El Charro Blanco is a vivacious tequila rested for 24 hours before bottling. It has a sleek lightweight body, a wafting floral and herbaceous bouquet and a lingering set of spicy, peppery flavors. The entire El Charro Tequila range is top-shelf worthy.
