Jose Cuervo
Tradicional 100% de
Agave Reposado Tequila

By Robert Plotkin

There is no name more famous in the tequila world than Jose Cuervo. But did you know that there were two Jose Cuervos? Jose Antonio de Cuervo is widely acknowledged as the first person to ever produce what would eventually become known as tequila. In 1795, his son, Jose Maria Guadalupe Cuervo, was granted the first license to commercially produce tequila from King Carlos IV of Spain. The brand has remained internationally renowned for two centuries. Few products better illustrate why the distillery has achieved preeminence than Jose Cuervo Tradicional 100% de Agave Reposado Tequila.

Made in the town of Tequila at the Jose Cuervo distillery—La Rojeña—Tradicional is handcrafted entirely from mature blue agaves. The harvested piñas are steamed in clay ovens prior to being pressed and fermented. The tequila is double-distilled and then aged in white oak casks for 6 months. It is made in limited production and bottled at 80-proof.

A few moments alone with Tradicional Reposado will reveal why it's the bestselling 100% agave tequila in Mexico. The straw-colored tequila has a medium–weight body with a generous bouquet of oak and herbaceous aromas. The palate features the flavors of herbs, caramel and vanilla, all of which last long into the warm, spicy finish.

Most enthusiasts don't know that Jose Cuervo Tradicional is actually a vintage dated tequila. The lower label on the bottle pictured above contains the phrase "212 años," which means that it was produced in 2007.
