Looking to put more romance in your life? Well, there are few products more romantic than recently introduced Kirk & Sweeney 12 Year Dominican Rum. Handcrafted in the Caribbean and aged in hot island days and cool tropical nights, Kirk & Sweeney is a sultry treat perfect for sipping after dinner.
This thoroughly enjoyable rum is made Santiago de los Caballeros, a city located in the Cibao Valley in the center of the Dominican Republic. It is crafted entirely from locally grown sugar cane. After distillation, the spirit is matured for a minimum of 12 years in American white oak barrels and bottled at 40% alcohol by volume (80 proof).
"Kirk and Sweeney was the name of a wooden schooner that was best known for its days smuggling rum from the Caribbean to the Northeast United States during Prohibition," comments August Sebastiani, president of importer 35 Maple Street. "There's a historical bent for each of our spirits, so we thought naming the rum after the Kirk and Sweeney was appropriate."
The rum is a bona fide gem. Kirk and Sweeney has a deep mahogany hue, silky, medium-weight body and a wafting bouquet laced with honey, coffee, cocoa and herbaceous cane aromas and subtle smoky notes. The entry is soft and cool and then it gradually expands and fills the mouth with the barrel-induced flavors of vanilla, toffee, honey, dark chocolate, dried fruit and baking spices. It finishes long and flavorful.
In an ironic twist, the rum's packaging is as beautiful and its contents. Adds importer Sebastiani, "Playing off the concept of global navigation, we silk screened an antique nautical map of the main rum smuggling route around the circumference of the bottle. The neck features custom hand-numbering. Along with the ornate logo, the photo of the ship and a safety seal that is printed to look like nautical brass, the overall design serves as a reminder of the risk so many were willing to take for a good taste of rum during the 1920s."
Go ahead a mixed this añejo rum into a cocktail if you must, but Kirk & Sweeney Rum is a classy and elegant spirit best savored neat.
