The Kraken Black Spiced Rum

The Kraken
Black Spiced Rum

By Robert Plotkin

Mere mention of the legendary Kraken is enough to unnerve even the saltiest of seafaring men. The Kraken is a fierce and terrifying creature, an octopus-like beast of gargantuan proportions that lurks the depths of the ocean waiting to drag ships under the waves to their doom. Well, at least that's what we've heard. The only firsthand testimony we can contribute to the subject pertains solely to The Kraken Black Spiced Rum, an unbridled spirit awash with character and intrigue.

The Kraken is made from a blend of light, molasses-based rums produced by island-based Trinidad Distillers Limited. The secret to its success has everything to do with the all-important spice package. The Kraken is infused with 11 different herbs and spices—their exact composition and proportions are a closely held secret. To help preserve its inherent vitality, the rum is bottled at a lip-tingling 94 proof (47% alcohol). The higher alcohol concentration means that less water was added to reduce it to its bottling proof, which results in more of its natural flavors remaining intact.

With a glorious rum like The Kraken, the natural inclination is to reach for the nearest cocktail shaker and begin making drinks. However, do yourself a favor and sample it neat first. Alone in a glass the rum has the look of freshly brewed espresso. Its silky lightweight body is saturated with the aromas of nutmeg, vanilla and cinnamon. As engaging as it may be, the bouquet doesn't fully prepare you for the torrent of flavors headed your way. The entry is pleasantly gentle despite the elevated proof and quickly fills the mouth with a boatload of flavors including dark chocolate, clove, allspice and blackstrap molasses. The moderately long finish is laced with the additional flavors of vanilla, cinnamon and coffee.

While the rum may be named after a mystical beast, it's more of a gorgeous long-legged beauty when presented in a cocktail. Its striking color, aromatics and riveting array of flavors contribute greatly to drinks. In the hands of a talented mixologist, the rum has nearly unlimited potential.

The Kraken is a splendid dram from stem to stern. Bottoms up!
