One of the great milestones in history of distillation was the advent of blending complementary spirits together to obtain something that's more than the sum of its parts. It's now the pivotal step in the production of premium whiskey, brandy and rum. A world-class single malt Scotch, for example, is typically a blend comprised of malts of varying ages and wood finishes. Cognacs are assembled from eaux-de-vie of differing ages and appellations. When done with skill and intuition, the various elements meld together into something genuinely sensational—a spirit made better for every strand in its blend.

Such is the case with handcrafted Reserva del Maestro Dobel Diamond Tequila. Undoubtedly one of the most elegant and innovative tequilas on the market, it's comprised of barrel-matured tequilas of varying ages married together to produce a singular drinking experience. Specifically, this Olympic caliber expression is a blend of a 11+ months old reposado, a 2-years old añejo and a 3-years old extra añejo tequilas. Prior to bottling, the small batch spirit is filtered to remove all traces of color and impurities. It's so intriguing it'll make you wonder why no one has done this before.

Reserva del Maestro Dobel Diamond is the brainchild of master tequilero Juan Domingo "Dobel" Beckmann Legoretta, the 6th generation heir to Casa Cuervo. Working with maestros Marco Anguiano and Luis Yerenas, the trio produces the Reserva in limited quantity only twice a year. Its constituent tequilas are distilled from ranch-raised blue agaves in the lowlands of Jalisco. After harvesting, the plants are baked, slowly fermented and double-distilled in pot stills. The tequilas are then matured in new Bulgarian Balkan oak barrels with medium chars. The height of the creative process occurs when the tequileros blend the reposado, añejo and extra añejo tequilas into a magnificent, perfectly integrated spirit. It's worth noting that Reserva is technically considered a reposado because the youngest spirits used in the blend are aged less than a year.

Reserva del Maestro Dobel Diamond is a 100% agave tequila that looks like a blanco, yet drinks like an añejo. It has ideal clarity with a pale straw hue, an oily textured, medium-weight body and a bouquet laced with the enticing aromas of fruit, vanilla, mocha and toasted oak. You could set the glass down at this point and consider it a totally fulfilling experience—but seriously, don't. The 80-proof party has only begun.

The entry makes a striking first impression. The tequila's shimmery clear appearance hardly prepares the palate for what's headed its way. The full sensuous body is both unexpected and thoroughly engaging. It quickly fills the mouth with the semisweet flavors of chocolate, fruit, butterscotch and vanilla. The lingering finish is silky smooth and delectably spicy.

Reserva del Maestro Dobel Diamond is indeed a rare multi-faceted gem. The incomparable tequila is well deserving of its success and diamond classification. Salud!
