Magave Anejo 100% Agave Tequila

Magave Añejo 100% Agave

By Robert Plotkin

Finding a new marvelous brand of tequila is like discovering a stash of cash in your sock drawer. It's unexpected and invariably comes at exactly the right time. Such will be your reaction to cracking open a bottle of Magave Añejo 100% Agave Tequila for the first time. It's a guaranteed crowd-pleaser.

The Magave range of tequilas is crafted in the Highlands of Jalisco at Destiladora del Valle de Tequila [NOM 1438]. It's made using artisanal methods and state of the art equipment. For example, sugar-rich agaves are harvested and baked in both traditional brick ovens and ultra-efficient stainless steel autoclaves and the water used in production is repeatedly subjected to high-tech filtration. The juice extracted from the agaves is allowed to slowly ferment precipitated by airborne yeasts and then double-distilled in stainless steel pot stills. All three expressions are aerated up to 10 hours before being bottled at 40% alcohol by volume (80 proof).

Magave Añejo is a noble, sophisticated spirit aged in American white oak barrels between 14 months and just under 3 years depending on aging conditions. During its extended stay in wood, the tequila obtains a rich amber/golden hue, a velvety textured, medium-weight body and an alluring bouquet of red cherries, vanilla, caramel and baking spices. Its aromatics are irresistible. Upon entry, the añejo bathes the palate with a broad array of flavors, including toffee, butterscotch, zesty citrus, vanilla and cinnamon. The finish is long and laced with the added flavors of coconut and crème brûlée. It's a sensational way to cap off a beautiful evening.

Magave Reposado is equally captivating. It is aged in American white oak barrels for 8 months, which is long enough for the wood to affect its taste profile, but not so long that the character of agave is lost. The reposado has a pale amber hue, an oily, medium-weight body and a spicy, dried fruit and fresh citrus bouquet. The tequila's palate is saturated with the lively flavors of vanilla, honey, caramel and jalapeño with citrus and spice appearing in the long, lingering finish.

Bottled fresh from the still and therefore unaffected by barrel aging, Magave Blanco is a refined, elegant tequila that best illustrates the master distiller's degree of craftsmanship. It has a crystal clear appearance with a lightweight, satiny textured body and a wafting floral, spice and fruit nose. The palate is dry, spicy and laced with fruit and peppery flavors. While excellent for use in cocktails, the blanco is superb sipped neat.
