Menage a Trois Vodka

Ménage à Trois Vodka

By Robert Plotkin

Vodka sales in this country continue skyrocketing and now constitute more than a third of all distilled spirits sold. Certainly one factor in the category's expanding popularity is the increase in the number of micro-distillers entering the market with regional brands of vodka. These handcrafted gems are of high quality and loaded with character. Equally important they are typically made with local ingredients and nearby spring waters, thereby imprinting the spirit with a sense of place, or terroir. Buying local is a megatrend that has come to stay and vodka sales seem to be a direct beneficiary.

An excellent example is Ménage à Trois Vodka, a skillfully spirit made by Napa Valley vintner Trinchero Family Estates, producers of bestselling Ménage à Trois blended red wine. The vodka is distilled from corn and pristine spring water sourced from the San Bernandino Mountains. A delicate and complicated process is employed called "continuous fermentation," whereby a special strain of yeast is used to convert the sugars in the corn into alcohol. The fermented wash is distilled 6 times in a state-of-the-art continuous still. The resulting vodka is then rigorously filtered to essential purity and bottled at 40% alcohol (80 proof).

If you haven't tried a superior artisanal vodka like Ménage à Trois you're in for a bona fide treat. It has ideal clarity, a satiny textured, medium-weight body and the enticing aromas of semisweet grain, licorice and citrus zest. The longer the vodka is allowed to breathe, the more aromatics come to the forefront. The entry onto the palate is mild and relaxed while it expands filling the mouth with the flavors of tart red berries, anise, cacao, nutmeg and cinnamon. The finish is long, dry and spicy.

"Like our Ménage à Trois wine, we believe the best things come in threes," says Chris Nicks, vice president of spirits & imports at Trinchero Family Estates. "Ménage à Trois Vodka undergoes a proprietary triple filtration process and is available in three expressions – Straight, Triple Berry and Triple Citrus. The all-natural flavors are also triple derivatives. Ménage à Trois Citrus Vodka is made with a blend of lemons, limes and oranges, while the Ménage à Trois Berry is produced with raspberries, cranberries and pomegranate."

Gluten-free Ménage à Trois Vodka is a classy, contemporary spirit.
