Midori Melon Liqueur

Midori Melon Liqueur

By Robert Plotkin

Midori burst into the American limelight in the early 1980s and has never looked back. The famous brand can now be found on every self-respecting backbar in the country, not to mention the world. Its popularity, in fact, continues to grow as a steadily increasing numbers of contemporary mixologists incorporate into their drink recipes Midori Melon Liqueur.

Produced by Suntory in Kyoto, Japan, this now indispensable brand is made from a base of neutral spirits with a proprietary infusion of natural flavorings; the most readily identifiable being honeydew melon. Its lustrous, emerald green color is absolutely intriguing, which has certainly played a role in the liqueur's meteoric success.

Midori has a energetic bouquet with the engaging aromas of melons, bananas and strawberries. The soft, supple body immediately fills the mouth with the fresh, vibrant flavors of honeydews, ripe cantaloupes and bananas. Its medium-weight body and slightly sweet palate make the brand ideal for mixed drinks. The liqueur has excellent persistence of flavor.

Midori's ascendancy into celebrity status can be attributed to its one-of-a-kind flavor and moderate 20% alcohol by volume, with both contributing to the liqueur's exceptionally high mixability quotient. Add to that a distinctively shaped, textured bottle and you've got the makings of a modern classic.

It's difficult to imagine operating any club without Midori. Like most great supporting actors, it receives little fanfare, yet among professionals it ranks on the short list of "must have" products. Without Midori on the backbar a large segment of popular mixology drops off-line.
