Muerto Reposado 100% Puro de Agave Tequila

Muerto Reposado
100% Puro de Agave

By Robert Plotkin

If you're looking for a great tequila, one that's the result of brains, initiative and hard work rather than boardrooms, spreadsheets and profit margins, Muerto 100% Puro de Agave Tequila is just the ticket. Likewise, if you're a fan of limited release products and rooting for the little guys, than you've come to the right place.

Muerto is the story of two average Joes—Ralph Bailey and Mike O'Hara—who met several years ago, shared a passion for world-class tequila and decided to take the plunge and create their own brand to share with family and friends. When their tequila started winning international awards and critical acclaim, Bailey and O'Hara took their tequila to market.

A few sips and you'll be glad they did. Muerto Tequilas are crafted at the family-owned and operated Destiladora Del Valle de Tequila [NOM 1438] in the town of Tequila. It's made using both traditional methods and state of the art techniques. After the agaves are harvested, they are quartered and baked in wood burning brick ovens and steam cooked in stainless steel autoclaves. The agaves are milled and the extracted juice is transferred to fermentation vats where it is allowed to slowly ferment using naturally occurring yeasts. The fermented wash—referred to as mosto—is then double-distilled in pot stills. The water used to dilute the finished tequila to 40% alcohol (80 proof) is rigorously filtered for purity.

Muerto Reposado 100% Puro de Agave Tequila is aged for a minimum of 7 months in Canadian white oak barrels. During its stay in wood, the tequila develops a deep, amber/golden hue, a satiny lightweight body and an enticing cinnamon, vanilla, caramel and light fruit bouquet. The brilliant aromatics are worth the price of admission. Its soft, gentle entry quickly expands, filling the mouth with a delectable array of spicy, bakery fresh flavors. The finish is smooth, long and slightly spicy.

Muerto Plata 100% Puro de Agave Tequila is bottled fresh from the still. It has ideal clarity, a textured lightweight body and a wafting herbal and spice bouquet. On the palate the tequila delivers the crisp flavors of citrus zest, dried herbs, light spice and sweet agave. The finish is clean, crisp and delightful.

The brand's name, Muerto, was inspired by the Mexican holiday of Dia de los Muertos, which is traditionally celebrated the beginnng of November. Over the course of two nights, the dead are believed to rise from their ground and visit with the living. Relatives of those who have passed celebrate with special foods, decorations, and of course, libations.
