100% Puro de Agave

By Robert Plotkin

Increased worldwide demand has prompted scores of new tequila brands to be introduced over the past few years. Of the recent releases, Nobleza Azul 100% Puro de Agave is a popular favorite among aficionados and pundits alike, a consensus opinion that's well deserved. All three expressions are sexy, sophisticated and loaded with character.

Ultra-premium Nobleza Azul is handcrafted at Destiladora Feliciano Vivanco "El Ranchito" (NOM 1414), which is located in the town of Arandas in the Los Altos Mountains of Jalisco. The Torres family began working on Nobleza Azul in 2006 after four generations of cultivating estate-grown agaves for other producers. After harvesting, the mature agaves are shredded and slowly baked with steam in large brick ovens called hornos. The resulting juice, rich with sugar, is then fermented in copper tanks to the soothing strains of classical music, which the craftsmen at El Ranchito believe has a profound affect on the quality of the fermenting must. The tequila is twice distilled in copper pot stills and matured in American white oak barrels. It is bottled at 40% alcohol by volume (80 proof).

The Nobleza Azul Blanco 100% Puro de Agave Tequila is bottled fresh from the still, free from the affects of barrel aging. The tequila has excellent clarity, a silky lightweight body and a peppery, vegetal bouquet with a wisp of orange zest. The dry, smooth entry expands quickly, filling the mouth with caramel, anise, cocoa and succulent red berries. The lingering finish is dry, slightly tart and eminently satisfying. Right from the onset, it makes a persuasive case for sipping blanco tequilas neat.

Nobleza Azul Reposado is aged for up to 11 months in charred American white oak barrels. During its extended stay in wood, the oily textured reposado develops an alluring pale amber hue and a bouquet of spice, vanilla, caramel and toasted oak. It immediately bathes the palate with the enticing semisweet flavors of cinnamon, citrus and toffee. The velvety smooth finish features the lingering flavors of fruit and spice with a hint of char from the barrel.

The centerpiece of the range is Nobleza Azul Añejo, a luxurious spirit barrel-aged between 1 and 3 years. The tequila has a deep amber hue, an oily, medium-weight body and a wafting bouquet of black pepper, cinnamon and vanilla, the flavors of which carry through onto the palate. The finish is long, buttery and remarkably elegant.

It goes without saying that each expression of Nobleza Azul is superb when mixed or presented in a Margarita. But before reaching for your cocktail shaker, do yourself a favor and sample the tequila neat to fully appreciate the its depth and brilliant personalities. It's a bona fide treat. Salud!
