Puerto Peñasco is a picturesque fishing town situated on the Gulf of Cortez about an hour's drive from the American-Mexican border. For decades Rocky Point, as it is also known, has grown in popularity with Americans looking for a resort community free of the glitz and cheesy pretense of more heavily frequented tourist destinations. For those seeking a Mexican get-away offering quiet sanctuary, abundant seafood, a decent nightlife and plenty of sunbathed beaches, Puerto Peñasco is just the place.

Rocky Point will soon also become known as the creative inspiration behind Tequila Peñasco 100% Puro de Agave. The sophisticated range of tequilas laudably captures Puerto Peñasco's understated beauty and elegance, all the while delivering a whole lot of bang for the buck. Great taste at a reasonable price is a compelling marketing proposition.

Tequila Peñasco is skillfully crafted at Tequila Quiote [NOM 1433] located in the heart of Jalisco. After harvesting, the mature agaves are baked, shredded and allowed to slowly ferment in stainless steel fermentation tanks. The fermented juice—which is referred to as mosto—is then double-distilled in copper pot stills and eventually bottled at 40% alcohol (80 proof).

One of the bonafide gems of the portfolio, Tequila Peñasco Reposado 100% Puro de Agave, is aged for 4 to 6 months in charred American oak barrels. During its stay in wood, the tequila develops an amber/gold hue, a satiny lightweight body and a wafting floral and fruit bouquet. Its heady aromatics are absolutely captivating. The entry is soft and gentle as it expands filling the mouth with the flavors of plums, cinnamon, clove, cacao, caramel and vanilla. The lingering finish is spicy warm. Kudos!

Equally impressive is critically acclaimed Tequila Peñasco Añejo 100% Puro de Agave, which is barrel-aged for 14 to 16 months. The dark, golden colored tequila has a flawlessly smooth, medium-weight body and a fetching bouquet of fresh fruit, chocolate, vanilla and caramel. After a few more minutes breathing in the glass the added aromas of fresh cut flowers, heather honey and cinnamon come forward. The entry raises a scant trace of excessive heat as it bathes the palate with a vibrant array of the luscious flavors of coconut, vanilla, dark chocolate, butterscotch, anise and clove. The spicy finish is spicy and long lasting.

The elder statesman of the range is Tequila Peñasco Reserva del Pueblo Extra Añejo 100% Puro de Agave. The special edition release is matured for no less than three-years in charred American oak. The rich, amber/gold tequila is velvety smooth and has a generous floral and oak-induced bouquet. The gentle entry quickly expands and fills the mouth with the relatively dry, delectable flavors of toffee, roasted coffee, dark chocolate, coconut, cinnamon and anise. Guaranteed this noble spirit is too delicious to share with the in-laws.

Tequila Peñasco Plata 100% Puro de Agave is bottled shortly after exiting the still. The Plata is crystal clear with a silky lightweight body and a spicy, floral and fruity bouquet. On the palate the vivacious tequila is spicy warm with loads of fruit flavors. It's challenging to make a genuinely praiseworthy blanco tequila. Tequila Peñasco Plata is just such a spirit.
