Pendleton Midnight Blended Canadian Whisky

Pendleton Midnight
Blended Canadian

By Robert Plotkin

Blending whiskeys together to obtain something that's more than the sum of its parts is a rarefied skill. Only a handful of individuals can lay claim to the title of master blender. When done with skill and precision, blending allows the various components to meld together into something genuinely sensational—a spirit made better for every whiskey in its blend. Few better illustrate the art and science of blending than Hood River Distiller's altogether tantalizing Pendleton Midnight Blended Canadian Whisky.

Hood River Distillers is the largest and oldest marketer of fine spirits in the Pacific Northwest. After being issued Oregon's first distiller's license, the company set up shop near the town of Hood River in the Columbia River Valley. In 2003, Hood River launched Pendleton Blended Canadian Whisky. When people describe a whisky as being smooth as silk, Pendleton is what they must have had in mind. Delicious and smooth are its two best descriptors. Little wonder why it is one of the fastest growing whisky brands in America.

The recently introduced Pendleton Midnight is a luxurious, super-premium blend of Canadian whiskies, a portion of which is aged for more than 6 years in American brandy barrels. After reaching maturity, the whisky is moved to Hood River Distillers where it is rendered to bottling strength of 45% alcohol (90 proof) using glacier-fed spring water from Mt. Hood, Oregon's highest mountain peak.

It's hard to imagine a whiskey enthusiast not swooning over all-world Pendleton Midnight. The whisky has a fetching, burnished copper appearance, a satiny, medium-weight body and a generous bouquet of vanilla, sliced plums, leather, semisweet grain and hot caramel. Allow the whisky a little extra time for its aromatics to fully develop. Your patience will be well rewarded. Its entry onto the palate is spicy warm as it quickly expands filling the mouth with the flavors of cacao, fruit, toffee, cinnamon and raisins. The fade reveals the additional flavors of honey, malt, spice and brown sugar.

This Canadian gem is a serious treat. Any more character and the makers will need a larger bottle. If you're in the market for a world-class spirit free of hype and hyperbole, Pendleton Midnight is just the ticket.
