Pyrat XO Reserve Rum

Pyrat XO Reserve Rum

By Robert Plotkin

Five miles north of St. Maarten, Anguilla is a scant 35-square miles in area. The tiny island is the home of Anguilla Rums, Ltd., maker of renowned alembic spirits, including Pyrat XO Reserve Rum, one of the best kept secrets in the Caribbean.

Introduced in 1998, Pyrat XO Reserve is a blend of nine pot-distilled rums aged in French oak barrels according to the Solera aging system. The blend ranges in age from 8- to 40-years. After aging, the rum is reduced in proof using coral-filtered spring water and bottled at 80-proof.

Pyrat XO Reserve is a genuine treat from start to finish. The rum has a lustrous amber color and a soft, medium-weight body. The broad, expansive bouquet is enticing, offering the comforting aromas of vanilla, allspice and molasses. Exceptionally smooth upon entry, it builds in intensity, quickly filling the mouth with the warm pastry-like flavors of cinnamon, caramel and vanilla. As one would hope, the flavors linger like a pleasant dream.

The crown jewel of the line is the limited release Pyrat® Cask 1623, a rum brimming with high ester character and taste. It has a luminescent, deep amber hue, a lush, smooth body and an alluring bouquet with vanilla, chocolate and toffee aromas. This acclaimed rum tracks over the palate without a trace of excess heat or harshness, a sign of its pedigree and uncompromised quality. Its broad swath of flavors slowly intensifies then gradually ebbs to a long, luxurious finish not dissimilar to that of a well-aged alembic brandy.
