Few brands come with a better backstory than The Real McCoy Rum. The rum is inspired by those produced by Captain Bill McCoy. The famed Prohibition rumrunner became known as "The Real McCoy" because he only delivered top quality, undiluted liquor to the speakeasies of New York. Other bootleggers of the time watered down their spirits or adulterated them with turpentine (among other things), practices that widely earned them the moniker "hooch." By contrast, Bill McCoy's rums became renown around the world as "The Real McCoy."

According to Bailey Pryor, president and CEO of The Real McCoy Spirits Corp, although Bill McCoy transported over 2 million bottles of rum to the speakeasies of New York during Prohibition, McCoy's activities never broke the law. His ships always remained in international water and never approached closer than three miles to our shores. Eventually McCoy grew into something of a legend and the phrase "The Real McCoy" became a part of the American lexicon meaning a product of impeachable quality.

"The challenge for us was creating a rum that actually lived up to its name," says Pryor. "We needed to find a genuine craftsman with decades of experience who could hold the line on quality and produce an authentically aged rum. As it turned out, it was McCoy himself who lead us to our distiller. Following a trail of historical evidence, we discovered that Bill McCoy purchased rum from Barbados. That is where we found our craftsman, Richard Seale, the 4th generation master distiller from the Foursquare Distillery. After six years of work, we are finally re-introducing the world to The Real McCoy rums are made at the same distillery Bill McCoy used."

The molasses-based rums are blends of column still and pot still distillate. After distillation, the rums are aged on Barbados in American white oak barrels and then blended prior to bottling. In keeping with the original Real McCoy, the rums are unadulterated and completely free of artificial flavors, colors or additives. All are bottled at 40% alcohol (80 proof).
