Riazul Premium Añejo
100% Agave Tequila

By Robert Plotkin

Riazul Premium 100% Agave Tequila is a 21st century brand and proud of it. It is a Highland gem with a satiny character perfectly instep with contemporary tastes. Legacy is one thing, but a brand that offers consumers great taste at a reasonable price is bound to meet with success here in the States. That is exactly the proposition behind Riazul. So if you're beyond being impressed by marketing claims, here's the brand for you.

Riazul is crafted at Compañia Tequilera de Arandas [NOM 1460] from mature agaves cultivated in the red volcanic soil of the Los Altos Mountains. After harvesting, the agaves are steamed in stainless steel ovens, shredded and the allowed to slowly ferment using a proprietary strain of yeast. The fermented wash—referred to as mosto—is then double-distilled and eventually bottled at 40% alcohol (80 proof).

Award-winning Riazul Premium Añejo 100% Agave Tequila is matured a minimum of 2 years in French oak barrels used previously to age cognac or brandy. The wood finish on this tequila is quite becoming and certainly a large contributing factor behind its collection of gold medals. During its stay in the barrel the tequila develops a golden/amber hue, a medium-weight, satiny textured body and a fetching floral and fruit bouquet with lively cinnamon, vanilla and cacao notes. Its gentle entry quickly fills the mouth with a lush array of flavors, including roasted almonds, herbaceous agave, vanilla, toffee and baking spice. The flavors persist long into the finish.

This enticing añejo needs a few extra minutes in the glass to breathe and fully reveal its bouquet. You'll be struck by how little heat the spirit raises in the mouth. It never gets past warm, which for most of us is a welcome change. While an excellent tequila to feature in an upscale cocktail, take a quiet moment and savor the tequila neat first.

Riazul Premium Reposado is aged for not less than 9 months in both French oak and charred, American white oak barrels. The tequila has a pale gold hue, a medium-weight body and a wafting clove, gingerbread, vanilla and zesty citrus bouquet. Its entry is spicy warm as it fills the mouth with the flavors of clove, anise, vanilla and caramel. The finish is warm, spicy and thoroughly enjoyable.

Unaged Riazul Premium Silver is bottled directly from the still. It's an elegant spirit possessing ideal clarity, a silky medium-weight body and a bouquet laced with the aromas of flora, dried herbs, anise and cacao. Its exuberant palate features clove, anise, vanilla and fresh red plums. The finish is warm and spicy. While this versatile silver tequila is a great mixer, it is also smooth and flavorful enough to serve neat or with a slight chill.

Riazul Premium Tequila, welcome to the United States. ¡Salud!
