Senor Rio Anejo

Señor Rio Añejo 100%
Agave Tequila

By Robert Plotkin

Some brands of tequila are conceived in boardrooms, the products of spreadsheets and advanced marketing campaigns. Conversely, some brands are created as labors of love and exist through personal conviction and dogged tenacity. Señor Rio 100% Agave Tequila is a perfect illustration of the latter. These classy, traditionally structured tequilas are based on a long-held family recipe and pay tribute to one of the founder's fathers—Señor Rio—whose likeness graces every exquisite bottle.

Introduced in May 2009, the tequila is crafted at famed La Cofradia (NOM 1137) in the lowlands of Jalisco. The blue agaves used in production are estate grown and baked in clay ovens for 30 hours or more. One of the secrets to its extraordinary character involves how the juice extracted from the agaves is fermented. The process takes place in open fermentation tanks, which allows the naturally occurring yeast in the air and the fragrant pollen from nearby mango and citrus trees to flavor the fermenting juice. The tequila is then double distilled and bottled at 80 proof.

Ultra-sophisticated Señor Rio Añejo 100% Agave Tequila spends a minimum of 24-months in oak barrels used previously to mature Tennessee whiskey. It has a rich amber hue, a silky medium-weight body and a bouquet laced with the aromas of vanilla, fresh plums and toasted oak. The palate immediately fills the mouth with the warm flavors of caramel, baking spices and citrus with intriguing smoky notes on the long elegant finish. Although fabulous featured in a cocktail, it's an añejo best savored in a snifter.

The Señor Rio Blanco is bottled fresh, directly from the still and therefore unadulterated by the effects of barrel aging. It's a lush spirit with ideal clarity, a smooth viscous body and an enticing citrus, spice and herbal bouquet. The palate offers a warm array of fruit and floral flavors that gradually taper to a citrus, pepper and spice finish. Sipping the blanco is a thoroughly satisfying experience.

The Señor Rio Reposado is a top-shelf contender aged for 6 months in Tennessee oak casks. During its stay in wood, the tequila develops an alluring wood-induced hue and a bouquet comprised of vanilla, caramel, citrus and black pepper notes. The reposado is smooth and refined with a broad palate of zesty citrus, anise, dried herbs and pepper.

Here's a range of tequilas that have been carefully nurtured from the ground up. Nary a drop is the product of corporate thinking or space-age technology. Señor Rio is tailor-made for those who want a sublime tequila and have the unhurried time to enjoy it.
