Siete Leguas Blanco 100% Agave Tequila

Siete Leguas Blanco
100% Agave Tequila

By Robert Plotkin

Opened in 1952 by legendary master distiller Don Ignacio González Vargas, Casa Siete Leguas has become one of the most prestigious distilleries in Mexico. It first garnered international prestige when it produced the original tequila used to launch the now famous Pátron brand in the late '80s. The famed producer is now better known—and rightfully so—as the creator of critically acclaimed Siete Leguas 100% Agave Tequilas.

Located in town of Atotonilco in the Highlands of Los Altos, Casa Siete Leguas (NOM 1120) is very much a traditionally oriented distillery. After harvesting, the mature blue agaves are slowly baked in masonry ovens and crushed by a mule-driven tahona wheel. The extracted juice is then fermented and double-distilled in a copper pot still. The resulting tequila is filtered for purity and bottled at 40% alcohol by volume (80 proof).

The altogether sensational Siete Leguas Blanco 100% Agave Tequila is bottled fresh from the still. If you liked the original Pátron Blanco, you'll adore this brilliantly aromatic and flavorful silver tequila. It has ideal clarity, a velvety, medium-weight body and a generous nose brimming with spice, pepper, citrus and the unmistakable aroma of wet pavement. The bouquet alone is well worth the purchase price. It has a gentle entry that bathes the palate with herbal, spice and fruit flavors. The finish is long and sublime. A more elegant blanco tequila you will not find.

Siete Leguas Reposado 100% Agave Tequila is matured in American white oak barrels for a minimum of 6 months. During that time the tequila develops a pale straw hue, an oily textured, medium-weight body and a wafting, herbaceous, caramel and citrus bouquet. The tequila fills the mouth with the flavors of black pepper, zesty citrus and toasted oak. It finishes long and smooth.

Barrel-aged for not less than 18 months, Siete Leguas Añejo 100% Agave Tequila is the elder statesman of the range. It has a rich amber/gold appearance, a round, sultry body and an enticing bouquet laced with the aromas of caramel, pepper, spice and vanilla. The añejo presents a medley of flavors including toffee, toasted oak, citrus and cinnamon. It's a thoroughly enjoyable spirit with a long, luxurious finish.

The brand name honors the revolutionary hero General Francisco "Pancho" Villa. The general rode his horse Siete Leguas ("Seven Leagues") into many battles, so named in recognition of the distance the steed was capable of galloping.

The general would undoubtedly be proud to be associated with such a superb family of tequilas. Salud!
