Certainly no one can accuse this skillfully crafted tequila of being staid or stodgy. In fact, Técnico Reposado 100% Agave Tequila is something of a cultural icon. Along with its sister brand Rudo 100% Agave Tequila, Técnico tequila pays homage to Lucha Libre—which literally translates to "Free Fighting"— professional wrestling. The sport is much beloved in the Latino culture. It is a quickly growing phenomenon, the second most popular sport in Mexico after soccer. As such, Lucha Libre is as Mexican as tequila itself.

For those not familiar with the sport, Lucha Libre wrestlers are traditionally divided into two categories. Rudos are the bad guys who wear red masks and resort to using underhanded tactics, while Técnicos are the sport's noble heroes. They wear blue masks, play by the rules and wrestle in high-flying style.

Super-premium Rudo and Técnico tequilas have embossed labels featuring cartoon-style representations of each wrestler. The lighthearted presentation is carried through to the carved wooden enclosures fashioned after the Rudo and Técnico wrestling masks. Both brands are bottled at 80 proof and range in price from $32.99 to $42.99.

Técnico and Rudo tequilas are made at Impulsora Rombo (NOM 1467) in the highlands of Jalisco using time-tested traditional techniques. After harvesting, the mature agaves used in production are first baked in clay ovens for up to 3 days and allowed to slowly and ferment for 72-96 hours using proprietary, chemical-free strains of yeast. The extra long fermentation at low temperatures ensures that the sugars in the agave are fully converted into alcohol. These sugars account for the complex fruity flavors present in the finished tequila. The fermented juice—called "mosto"—is then double distilled in copper pot stills.

Técnico Reposado is aged in charred, American white oak barrels for a minimum of 4 months. It has a lustrous amber hue, a satiny textured body and a spice and citrus bouquet. The palate is a lively, long lasting affair of cocoa, white pepper and toasted oak. From start to savory finish, the Técnico Reposado is a marvelous spirit ideal for sipping neat or using in a classic cocktail.

Aged in ex-bourbon barrels for 18 months, Técnico Añejo 100% Agave Tequila is the elder statesman of the range. The tequila is suave, savory and refined. Técnico Blanco 100% Agave Tequila is bottled directly from the still and has a satiny lightweight body and a lingering, lightly peppered finish. Both marques are priced well below market.

In the other corner, Rudo Tequilas are robust, yet thoroughly charming. The Rudo Blanco 100% Agave Tequila is aromatic and loaded with spice, while the 4-month old Rudo Reposado 100% Agave Tequila is a mix of toffee, vanilla and peppery spice. Aged 18 months in oak, the Rudo Añejo 100% Agave Tequila is silky smooth and eminently drinkable.

Técnico and Rudo Tequilas definitely punch above their weights. Regardless of which brand you root for, both are sure-fire winners.
