Teeling is one of the most famous names in Irish whiskey. The family has been involved in distilling spirit since 1782. Several centuries later, John Teeling becomes the founder the Cooley Distillery in County Louth, the first new whiskey distillery established in Ireland in over 100 years. During its more than 25 years in operation, the Cooley Distillery was responsible for producing such famed whiskeys as Kilbeggan, Tyrconnell and Connemara Peated Single Malts.

Fast-forward to 2012, John Teeling's sons—Jack and Stephen—launch the Teeling Whiskey Company and its state of the art Teeling Distillery in the heart of Dublin. The company aspires to become the country's leading independent Irish whiskey producer through innovation and an enticing selection of handcrafted Irish whiskeys.

If you've yet to sample one of the incomparable Teeling Irish Whiskeys, you're in for a rare treat.

Teeling Small Batch Irish Whiskey is an extraordinary blended whiskey comprised of 35% malt whiskey and 65% grain whiskey (maize and malted barley). A high percentage of the blend is aged in first-fill bourbon barrels for between 4 and 7 years. To round off its maturation, the whiskey is transferred to former Flor de Caña Rum casks for 6 months. Afterwards it is bottled at 46% alcohol (92 proof) without the use of chill filtration.

Alone in the glass, Teeling Small Batch has an amber/golden hue, a full, velvety textured body and the beckoning aromas of baked apples, allspice, vanilla and ripe plums. Its aromatic signature is quite fetching and does a grand job preparing the palate for the pleasures to follow. Its prickly, spicy warm entry confirms the whiskey's elevated alcohol content. Teeling Small Batch has a surgically well-balanced palate possessing nary a shred of excess sweetness. The lingering finish is imbued with the flavors of cinnamon, caramel, dried herbs and a splash of spice. Top notch.

Teeling Single Grain Irish Whiskey is one of the elite, single grain Irish whiskeys on the market. Released in 2013, this award-winning spirit is comprised of a proprietary blend of grain whiskeys—principally corn—all of which having been produced at a single distillery. After exiting the column still, the young whiskey is transferred to hand-selected, Californian Cabernet Sauvignon wine barrels for not less than 5 years. Once it has attained the desired flavor profile, it is bottled at 46% alcohol (92 proof) and left non-chilled filtered.

Trust me, Teeling Single Grain is too good to share with the in-laws. The whiskey has an alluring amber hue, a full, round body and a generous, spice and fruit bouquet. The whiskey requires a few extra minutes to fully open, but guaranteed your patience will be well rewarded. The smooth entry immediately begins to expend and the bathe the palate with the semisweet flavors of honey, cranberries, apples and a bevy of spices. The long, dry finish tastes of caramel and baking spices.
