After practicing a craft for more than a century you're bound to really know what you're doing. The master distillers at the family-owned El Llano Distillery [NOM 1109] have indeed perfected the art and science of distilling world-class tequila. Founded in 1900, it is one of the oldest distilleries in Jalisco. Likely their crowning achievement is Tres Agaves Reposado 100% Agave Tequila.
The agaves used to make Tres Agaves Tequilas are cultivated in the mineral-rich soil of the Lowlands of Jalisco. After harvest, the agaves are baked in autoclave ovens, shredded to extract the juice, slowly fermented with a proprietary strain of yeast and then double-distilled in small, single-batch pot stills. The range is bottled at 40% alcohol by volume (80 proof).
If you're in the market for a genuinely elegant reposado, look no further than the one made by Tres Agaves. The tequila is matured between 6 to 9 months in Jack Daniels Tennessee whiskey oak casks and Woodford Reserve and Heaven Hill bourbon barrels. The reposado has an amber hue, a lightweight, silky textured body and a generous citrus, herbaceous and lightly floral nose. Its palate features a sublime blend of herbs, lemons, spice, mint and black pepper with a hint of menthol on the finish.
Equally engaging is Tres Agaves Añejo, an extended aged, Lowland masterpiece. The artisanal añejo is aged 18 months in America white oak barrels used previously to age Woodford Reserve Bourbon. During its stay in wood, the tequila acquires a dark amber hue, a velvety textured body and a wafting bouquet of flora, zesty citrus, toffee, dark chocolate and dried herbs. The palate delivers waves of savory flavors, including herbs, vanilla, baking spices and black pepper. The lingering finish is flavorful and thoroughly satisfying.
Tres Agaves Blanco is a modern handcrafted classic, an ideal introduction to the joys of sipping unaged tequila. It has a light satiny body and a wafting fruity and herbaceous nose. On the palate, the tequila delivers waves of spicy, minty and vegetal flavors. The finish is crisp, clean and delicious.
The company also makes two outstanding, cocktail-ready ingredients perfectly suited for any bar regardless of size or concept. The first is Tres Agaves Agave Nectar, which is made from organic blue agaves and just enough purified water to make the nectar easily dissoluble in cold beverages while also providing a spot-on, consistent sweetness level from cocktail to cocktail. It is specifically designed to be the ideal sweetener in artisan Margaritas. The other is the award-winning Tres Agaves Margarita Mix, a refreshing, shelf stable mix made with all natural, USDA certified organic lime juice, organic agave syrup and purified water. Scour the world if you must, you likely won't find a better balanced, more delectable Margarita mix.
